What is the Bureau of International Health Cooperation?

The Bureau of International Health Cooperation provides various kinds of supports in order to improve health care in developing countries.　There are a number of countries in the world where people in poverty cannot receive adequate health care, where pregnant women cannot access to maternal health care and safe childbirth, and where people die young due to preventable or treatable infectious diseases.　We have been assisting developing countries mainly in the fields of maternal and child health, infectious disease control, and health system strengthening in order to protect the people from life-threatening diseases.

Since founding in 1986, we have worked as a leading Japanese international cooperation agency in the health sector in cooperation with the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the World Health Organization (WHO). We dispatch experts to technical cooperation projects in developing countries, train health personnel domestically and abroad, and conduct health research.　In addition, we dispatch medical relief teams in many parts of the world in response to natural disasters and epidemic of communicable diseases.
